Aaron Hauptmann

Intern Architect

I was born in Texas but spent the majority of my childhood growing up in Europe. I attended the University of Kent in Canterbury, England graduating with a Masters in Aesthetic Philosophy and a Bachelors of Film Studies and Philosophy. I then spent 3 years recruiting students for the University of Kent which took me to nearly 20 countries including Nigeria, Ghana, Turkey, and Azerbaijan amongst others. My favorite country to visit was Vietnam, the country is beautiful, and the food is some of the best I’ve ever had.

I’m currently a year away from completing my Master in Architecture at Iowa State University.

What excites you most about Neumann Monson?

I’m really excited to be joining NM for the summer, since moving to Iowa NM has been one of the firms that has inspired and excited me the most. The people here are engaged, interesting, attentive, and dedicated to the best design solutions. I can’t wait to learn more from everyone here in the Des Moines Studio.

What other designer do you admire and why?

Snohetta has been pushing the envelope in sustainable design, what I admire most about their work is that they pursue the right decisions for the environment while never losing their rigor for the best design. I’ve always had a soft spot for the sensibility of Scandinavian design.

What makes Iowa unique?

I moved to Iowa 3 years ago, and have fallen in love with the landscape and lifestyle here. Iowa has a fantastic balance between affordable costs of living, and more social/cultural events than I have the time to take advantage of, and I love all the summer activities in Des Moines, like the Des Moines Art Festival. I have a 4 year old son and another kid on the way, and I couldn’t think of a better place to raise my kids.
