Kinnick Stadium’s original structure was built in 1929, with the addition of the south end zone structure in 1972. While the building has been repaired through the years, the facility was outdated and in need of modernization to meet current Big 10 Football standards.
The goal of this project was to address several long-standing deferred maintenance issues and facility shortcomings, including structural updates throughout the stadium, demolishing and rebuilding the south end zone structure, expanding the press box, and adding a South Plaza entrance. Extensive revenue-generating and event spaces have been incorporated, which provide amenities that can be used throughout the year for a variety of public and private events.
Service spaces such as concessions and restrooms have been dramatically increased to match demand. Traffic within the stadium has also been reworked to decrease congestion and confusion.
The Krause Family Plaza was added to the south. This plaza is designed for both pre-game and halftime use. On non-game days this plaza is used for campus parking.
Design and construction was broken down into several phases and was carefully implemented so that the 2004, 2005 and 2006 football seasons were not interrupted.
