For over 40 years, Riverside Theatre has connected Iowa artists and audiences through classic productions and new works. A long-time resident of Iowa City's historic Northside neighborhood, the organization had begun to grow out of its original theatre and began searching for a new location that allowed for more flexibility and larger audiences.
They found a perfect fit in a portion of historic buildings slated for renovation on the city's pedestrian mall, which has long been an epicenter of arts and culture. The century-old building has been modernized while retaining and celebrating its history. It's tailored to be accessible, inclusive, and comfortable for audiences and staff.
The patron experience starts at the exterior storefront with art deco signage that extends indoors, imbuing the space with a sense of play and style. Original staircases with illuminated handrails help guide patrons up and past the second floor to the third floor. Behind closed doors on the second floor, a compact spiral staircase connects amenities for performers and production members to the third-floor backstage area and green room.
The third-floor lobby is a place where audiences can congregate before and linger after shows, purchase concessions, and where the theatre can host smaller events or discussions. It's a space intended to inspire conversation and build community. Adjacent to the lobby, the versatile 150-seat black box theatre can be configured in a myriad of ways, bringing the audience close to the action, preserving and enhancing the intimate feel that's been a hallmark of the organization throughout its history.
