The Iowa Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) honored Neumann Monson President Tim Schroeder, AIA, with the 2020 AIA Iowa Medal of Honor. Tim was formally recognized during a virtual awards ceremony of the annual AIA Iowa convention.

Tim joined Neumann Monson in 1994 and quickly became a trusted partner, balancing client needs and delighting them with elegant architectural solutions. In 2000 he was named the third principal of the firm. The studio he led consistently produced top quality design work and Tim created an appetite across the entire firm to emulate that success. These efforts yielded the firm’s first AIA Iowa and Central States Region design awards.

While an emerging professional, Tim led several projects to sustainable firsts in Iowa, while his work with a local developer introduced urban living and renewed vibrancy to downtown Iowa City. These contributions, along with his efforts as Editor-in-Chief of Iowa Architect Magazine, led to Tim’s receipt of the AIA National Young Architect Award in 2008 and underscored the insight and discipline he brought to Neumann Monson.

Fueled by the firm’s 35th anniversary in 2012, Tim was named Neumann Monson’s first head of operations to set a new course for the firm. Through a grassroots effort involving the entire firm, Tim improved our culture of design, built our empathy toward our clients, and created a remarkable culture of transparency, mentorship, rigor, and accountability. In 2018, Tim was named the third president in Neumann Monson’s 40-year history.

Tim’s balance of compassion and drive toward excellence has been echoed in his policies and practices designed to build empathy and align the firm around purposeful goals. The results of Tim’s leadership are clear. Neumann Monson has emerged as: leader in design and environmental stewardship; as a national leader in both client and employee stewardship; and as a community leader with expanding positive impact.

The Medal of Honor is the highest honor that an individual can receive from the AIA Iowa chapter, in recognition of their distinguished service to the profession.
