Cedar Rapids, Iowa, has served as a crossroads of Czech, Slovak, and Moravian culture in America since the 1850s. Immigrants fleeing political unrest established a vibrant community here, preserving their language and traditions. Today, the National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library reflects this enduring cultural legacy.
At the museum’s entrance stands the Immigration Clock Tower, a sculptural tribute to immigrant stories. Originally built in 1995, the tower was damaged by the 2020 derecho (and was already in disrepair prior to the storm). Its strategic demolition and reconstruction created an opportunity to infuse the landmark with deeper cultural meaning.
The tower’s midsection (approximately 16’ to 45’) was removed down to the steel superstructure. Through careful redesign and re-proportioning, the tower now presents a more solid and timeless appearance. Salvaged historic brick and precast concrete provide durability appropriate for a structure of this significance. Retaining the existing steel frame required close collaboration between local architects and Czech and Slovak craftsmen to integrate new instrumentation within its constraints.
The north façade features a custom-engineered astrolabe clock modeled after Prague’s Orloj, built in 1410. It tracks time, date, sun position, moon phases, and zodiac constellations—connecting human activity to ancient rhythms. The kinetic mechanism is crafted in stainless steel with 24-karat gold leaf detailing to withstand Iowa’s harsh climate.
At the top of each hour, red doors above the astronomical clock open to reveal twelve hand-carved figures representing the working lives of Czech and Slovak immigrants. Each four-foot figure, carved from Slovak white oak, rotates on a carousel set to music by Czech composers.
Engineering precision and artistic storytelling come together in this technical marvel. The tower’s vibrant cultural tribute draws crowds each hour, much like Prague’s Orloj has for centuries.
