In the Fall of 2023, the City of Coralville selected Neumann Monson Architects to update its 2004 master plan and conduct a feasibility study for renovating/adding to or building a new recreation center and natatorium. Final concepts were presented to the public on June 11, 2024, at Coralville City Hall.
Two options emerged and New Construction was awarded:
Renovation/Addition: 117,700 GSF, estimated cost range $52–56.2M
New Construction: 109,700 GSF, estimated cost range $50–55.4M
The Coralville Recreation Center & Natatorium is a civic destination designed to bring wellness, recreation, and community life together under one roof. The project balances a wide range of programs, from competitive athletics to casual play, within a clear and intuitive spatial framework that supports both activity and connection.
At the heart of the design is a commitment to flexibility and inclusivity. Three mixed-use courts, a 200-meter walking track, and expansive cardio and weight areas provide spaces for individual fitness and organized recreation. Fitness studios and a soft turf zone support a variety of programming, while community rooms create opportunities for gathering, events, and everyday use. Each program element is organized to promote visibility and ease of movement, reinforcing a sense of openness and accessibility throughout the facility.
The natatorium anchors the project as both a functional and experiential centerpiece. A full indoor pool supports lap swimming, lessons, exercise, and competition for youth and local schools, while a separate aquatic play pool introduces a more informal, family-oriented environment. Shallow water areas, fountains, slides, and a vortex create an engaging and dynamic space that invites exploration and play across age groups.
Daylight, material warmth, and clear circulation strategies enhance user comfort and orientation, reducing barriers to entry for a wide range of users. The building’s organization supports both high-energy activity and quieter moments, allowing the facility to operate seamlessly throughout the day.
As a whole, the Coralville Recreation Center & Natatorium reflects a holistic approach to community design—one that supports health, fosters connection, and creates a welcoming environment for residents of all ages and abilities.
