The new Des Moines U.S. Courthouse stands as a timeless symbol of justice and democracy—uniting riverfront, city, and state in a dignified architectural statement. Rooted in its historic setting, refined in form, and designed to serve both the public and the principles it represents, the courthouse strengthens the civic fabric of downtown Des Moines.
Positioned along the west bank of the Des Moines River, the courthouse occupies a 1.8-acre site once home to the YMCA and Coliseum. Its location bridges the Riverwalk’s network of public spaces with the city’s historic civic district, creating connections to City Hall and the State Capitol beyond. This contemporary landmark reinforces downtown revitalization while honoring its role as a federal institution.
Serving the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Iowa and three federal agencies—the General Services Administration (GSA), U.S. Attorney’s Office (USAO), and U.S. Marshals Service (USMS)—the 229,000-square-foot facility includes nine courtrooms, judges’ chambers, jury spaces, offices, and secure parking. The design reflects a pragmatic yet elegant approach, deeply rooted in place and purpose.
