North Mahaska Community School District passed a 2019 bond referendum to improve its preschool-12th grade facility in New Sharon, IA. The project relocates a wrestling/fitness building, adapts the elementary/middle school main office into preschool classrooms, inserts an enclosed walkway between two buildings, and upgrades the HVAC system.
In addition to providing a comfortable, supportive place for education to thrive, the school is deeply embedded in the community. The school is the area’s most robust safe storm shelter and citizens regularly participate in school events and use the facility as an after-hours resource.
This project addresses the school’s wide range of uses and users, interpreting the existing material palette and wielding resilient materials to pair functionality with spatial finesse.
The existing school could not accommodate a sprinkler system so the team leveraged a collaborative process among the school, the construction manager, Neumann Monson, consultants, and the state code review board to yield elegant, cost-effective solutions that satisfied each party’s requirements.
