Every organization needs a long-term plan for development. Master planning helps you establish a unified vision, schedule projects, and allocate resources over time.
Whether you oversee a building or campus, you carry plenty of responsibility. Balancing stakeholder interests, budgets, and ongoing maintenance can feel overwhelming. Master planning provides the direction you need to grow and proactively maintain your facilities.
A master plan gives a bird’s eye view of your growth and development. It forecasts the next five to ten years, so you can plan projects and allocate resources. Through stakeholder engagement and facility analysis, you receive a viable strategy for bringing your vision to life.
A successful master plan responds to the needs of those who live, work, and spend time in your building or on your campus. Workshops and planning sessions create a sense of shared ownership—resulting in a vision that fully encompasses your organization’s needs.

The master planning process will differ depending on your organization and needs. No matter the case, your architect should ask questions, listen to input, and assess cost and schedule implications.
While facilities assessments help identify your current needs, visioning workshops establish high-level goals for your organization’s future.
Turn your goals into actionable steps and receive the pricing information you need to allocate resources.
With a strategic plan, you can schedule work on each project component. Reviewing your plan every five to ten years helps keep you on track.

Master planning is a new experience for many organizations. Explore these frequently asked questions to better understand the process.
The length of the master planning process depends on the needs of your organization. School districts or campuses with multiple buildings can expect a longer process than an organization with a single facility. Internal decision-making and input from stakeholders can also lengthen the process. Generally, the process can last anywhere from six weeks to six months.
To help craft a successful master plan, your architect needs to understand your current facilities and expected changes to your organization. We recommend providing enrollment or growth projections, existing building drawings, tours of your existing facilities, and documentation from previous planning efforts.
Most organizations form a core group of decision-makers to lead the process. We also recommend including your facilities staff and a cross-section of your organization in visioning and planning workshops. Outside your organization, your architect may bring on consultants like civil, structural, and MEP engineers.
At the end of the master planning process, you will receive a report to reference when making decisions. It will include diagrams and a narrative, as well as an appendix that explains decision-making. The report should be easy to disseminate to members of your organization or the public.
Most master plans forecast five to ten years into the future. Beyond this timeframe, it can be difficult to predict costs, availability of resources, and your organization’s needs. We recommend updating your plan at least once every ten years.
